Job summary

The Office of State Parks (OSP) is seeking personnel for a Park Ranger position at Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, LA. The role focuses on enforcing laws, protecting visitors, and supporting park operations on a 40-hour rotating schedule.

No prior experience is required. Compensation starts at a minimum of $17.36/hr, with in-house training including POST and First-Aid/CPR certifications. Background checks may be required in Baton Rouge for final steps.

Responsibilities

• Protects park visitors by enforcing federal, state, and local laws and park rules and regulations.
• Performs emergency duties to protect human life, government property, and natural features of the site.
• Investigates incidents and/or complaints such as vehicular, vandalism, accidents, trespassing, and search/rescue that occur within the park boundaries.
• Work with federal, state, & local law enforcement agencies and district attorneys in the arrest and prosecution of individuals.
• Provides security by patrolling and inspecting the site by vehicle, foot patrol, bicycle, and boat.
• Assists overnight guests during their stay by performing customer service duties.
• Provides tourism information and local directions to the park visitors, and disseminates other information as requested.
• Performs maintenance, custodial, inspections, and/or fee collection tasks as needed.
• Prepares and maintains incident reports, recordings, etc. associated with law enforcement duties.
• Participates and successfully completes all required training by the Office of State Parks (OSP). The training includes POST Council Certification annually, annual certification in First-Aid/CPR, and other certifications as designated by the OSP.
• Works special details/events within the Office of State Parks in conjunction with federal, state, and local agencies that include inaugural events, search and rescue activities, parking details, specialized enforcement tasks, disaster assistance, and working special events at parks such as re-enactments, grand openings, day in the park events, school day events, etc.

Job description

The Office of State Parks (OSP) serves the citizens of Louisiana and visitors by preserving and interpreting natural areas of unique or exceptional scenic value, planning, developing, and operating sites that provide outdoor recreation opportunities in natural surroundings, preserving and interpreting historical and scientific sites of statewide importance, and administering intergovernmental programs related to outdoor recreation and trails.

This position is located at Bayou Segnette State Park, in Westwego, LA. The purpose of this position is to enforce all applicable laws in a state park and to educate the public on their role in the protection of natural resources, cultural, and historic resources.

No experience or training is required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by State and Federal laws is granted.
• Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
• This position may require the incumbent to handle and carry firearms.
• Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

Position-Specific Details:

Location: Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, LA

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotion, or Detail to Special Duty

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Park Ranger 1 or 2, depending on experience. Please refer to the "Class Specifications" page for specific information on salary ranges, minimum qualifications, and job concepts for each level.

Work Schedule: State Parks are open 365 days a year. Position will work a rotating schedule of 40 hours/week, which can include holidays and/or weekends as needed, to ensure coverage at the park.

Travel: Position requires driving around the park for patrol as part of the daily shift. Travel may be required to other state parks to assist in staffing or events, as needed. A state vehicle is available for employee use while on duty.

Compensation: Minimum $17.36/hr. (Compensation offered will be dependent on level of experience and certification)
