Job summary

Culture, Recreation and Tourism seeks an energetic education specialist at Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, LA to educate the public on natural and cultural resources and to protect and interpret artifacts in support of state parks and historic sites.

• Bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in archaeological/anthropological work or conservation/natural resource management, or interpretive/educational programs.

Responsibilities

• Implements site level educational programs and interpretive effectiveness with audits and evaluations.
• Designs, coordinates, and develops new educational programs, exhibits, audiovisuals, and trails.
• Works with educational institutions to provide interpretive activities for school groups.
• Assists staff with cleaning the interior and exterior of buildings in preparation for reservations and groups, including grounds upkeep, trail maintenance, and litter pickup.
• Works with Public Information teams to gather, prepare, and disseminate information about the site to media and the public.
• Collaborates with departmental and external partners to update promotional and informational materials.
• Performs administrative tasks: scheduling, calls, mail, and paperwork.
• Operates POS system for guest check-in, fees, payments, and reports.
• Provides information and answers inquiries for site visitors.
• Reviews programs and exhibits for historical accuracy and interpretive value with Administrative Office Educational Services and Public Information.

Job description

The Office of State Parks (OSP) serves the citizens of Louisiana and visitors by preserving and interpreting natural areas of unique or exceptional scenic value, planning, developing and operating sites that provide outdoor recreation opportunities in natural surroundings, preserving and interpreting historical and scientific sites of statewide importance and administering intergovernmental programs related to outdoor recreation and trails.

This position is located at Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, LA. The purpose of this position is to educate the public on the natural and cultural resources of the state and to cultivate, protect, and utilize historical artifacts in support of state parks and state historic sites.

Four years of experience in archaeological or anthropological work; or in conservation work or natural resource management; or in planning or presenting interpretive or educational programs relating to cultural or physical history or relating to the natural environment; OR

A bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in archaeological or anthropological work; or in conservation work or natural resource management; or in planning or presenting interpretive or educational programs relating to cultural or physical history or relating to the natural environment.

Job Duties

• Implements site level educational programs and interpretive effectiveness with the conduct of program audits and evaluations.
• Conceptualizes, designs, coordinates, & develops new educational programs, interpretive exhibits, audiovisuals, & trails
• Works with educational institutions to provide related interpretive activities for school groups.
• Assists staff with cleaning the interior and exterior of buildings in preparation for incoming reservations and groups, to include grounds upkeep, trail maintenance, and litter pickup.
• Works closely with Public Information teams in gathering, preparing, and disseminating information about the site to the media and directly to the public.
• Collaborates with departmental agency personnel as well as outside agencies in the update and/or revision of existing promotional and informational materials.
• Performs various administrative tasks such as scheduling, answering telephone calls, processing mail, and completing paperwork.
• Operates POS system for check-in of guests, collect fees, and process payments and reports.
• Provides information and answers inquiries for site visitors.
• Works closely with Administrative Office Educational Services and Public Information teams, and site management to review programs and exhibits for historical accuracy and interpretive value.

Position-Specific Details

Location: Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, LA

Appointment Type: This position will be filled as a part-time Classified WAE

Work Schedule: This position is limited to 1,245 working hours in a 12 month period. Starting Hourly Pay varies, depending on experience. State Parks are open 365 days a year. Position will work a rotating schedule which can include holidays and/or weekends as needed, to ensure coverage at the park.
