Position Overview:

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to serve as the Park Manager for Nine Eagles State Park. This position offers a unique opportunity for someone passionate about natural resource stewardship, park operations, and public service. The Park Manager will oversee all aspects of park management, including maintenance, visitor services, budgeting, staff supervision, and conservation practices. The successful candidate must live within 30 miles of the park, as outlined in DNR Park Bureau policy.

About Nine Eagles State Park:

Nestled in southern Iowa near Davis City, Nine Eagles State Park spans over 1,000 acres of natural beauty, including forests, ravines, and Nine Eagles Lake. It offers camping, fishing, hiking, equestrian trails, wildlife viewing, and winter recreation. The park features amenities like a reservable cabin and over 50 camping sites, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful escape.

Your Role as a State Park Manager Will Be To:
  • Assist the district supervisor with daily park administration, including managing staff, hiring and training seasonal/temporary workers, managing contracts, overseeing budgets, and maintaining inventory.
  • Plan and perform park maintenance, preventative maintenance, and construction to ensure facility and resource integrity, including inspections of trails, natural areas, playgrounds, and docks.
  • Represent the Department publicly to promote the park system, safety, and resource management, and assist with interpretive and volunteer programs, engaging with local agencies and stakeholders.
  • Ensure visitor safety, property security, and order in public areas through enforcement of Iowa DNR rules, and participate in training on enforcement techniques and equipment maintenance.
Essential Functions:
  • Manage parks applying technical knowledge and experience.
  • Maintain power tools and equipment used in park maintenance.
  • Apply principles of parks, recreation, and resource management.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions and indoors in office environments.
  • Train staff and volunteers, foster teamwork, and communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Work independently, organize projects, and operate motor vehicles, including lifting heavy loads.
  • Use PC software for budgeting, data management, and reporting.
  • Adapt to changing work conditions, demonstrate initiative, and uphold high ethical standards.

Comments and Special Requirements:
  1. Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months for Wapello Park.
  2. Obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s License within six months.
  3. Maintain a valid driver’s license.
  4. Obtain Water/Wastewater Certification within six months for Beeds and Wapello Parks.
  5. Complete CPR/First Aid Certification within six months.
  6. Complete Chain Saw Safety Certification within one year.
  7. Complete Defensive Tactics Training within one year.
  8. Reside within the travel requirement as per DNR Park Bureau Policy.
