Job description

Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and labor tasks in the maintenance of City parks, grounds and facilities; operates light to medium duty equipment as related to job duties; does related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  1. Mows and edges turf areas, trims shrubbery and trees, cleans park grounds, toilets and patios.
  2. Assists skilled workers in the installation and maintenance of playground equipment, sports equipment, drinking fountains, bleachers, picnic tables, fences and irrigation systems.
  3. Assists with weed abatement program, which may include herbicide spraying.
  4. Operates trucks, tractors, gang mowers, and other light to medium duty equipment as required.
  5. Does layout and burning in of official youth sport playing fields; prepares ball diamonds for games.
  6. Uses small gas powered grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools.
  7. Does other related duties as required.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Positions in this Class work under the supervision and direction of a Park Maintenance Lead Worker or Senior Park Maintenance Worker. May be assigned to work independently.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent G.E.D. and one (1) year of experience in general maintenance work with a favorable and verifiable work history.

LICENSE

Must have and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn maintenance and grounds keeping duties and routines; to follow written and oral directions; to work well with other employees as well as the public; to be reliable and to maintain good work habits.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend; must have mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; requires lifting, pushing, and/or pulling. This position is performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to the elements. May be required to work in inclement weather, damp conditions and in confined spaces; may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, paint, dust and vehicular traffic. Daily tasks require frequent and repetitive motions and require lifting material of 50 pounds or more. Actual working conditions may vary based on specific worksites. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and special events as needed.

  • Supplemental Questions - Pass/Fail
  • Oral Interview - 100% of total score

Candidates must pass all examinations to be placed on the eligible list.
