The City of La Porte is seeking a Parks Maintenance Worker I to perform entry-level grounds maintenance and custodial duties across city parks, playgrounds, and medians.

This full-time, on-site position requires mowing, trimming, edging, planting, and cleaning, with operation of power mowers and related equipment; no prior experience required, but a valid Texas driver’s license is preferred, and the role reports to Parks staff to keep facilities safe and welcoming for all.

PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER I

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of semi‑skilled gardening and landscape maintenance and custodial duties.

DISTINGUISHED CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level in the Park Maintenance series. Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished from Parks Maintenance Worker II class in that the latter performs the more semi‑skilled as well as skilled park maintenance duties, and works under general supervision of the Senior Park Maintenance Worker.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from higher level Park Maintenance staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Mow, trim, weed, and water parks, playgrounds, and medians.
  • Operate power mowers, edger, and other equipment.
  • Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, swimming pool and other facilities.
  • Assist in maintaining athletic fields and other recreational facilities.
  • Spade and otherwise prepare ground around plants and shrubs. Plant and maintain trees, flowers and shrubs.
  • Pick up rubbish and paper, and perform general grounds cleaning
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to fumes, odors, dust/mites, and mechanical hazards; exposure to extreme cold, heat, temperature swings and constant noise; walking; twisting body; working in trenches; stooping; standing; squatting; sitting; seeing; kneeling; grasping; climbing; cleaning; reading; reaching above shoulder level; pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 75 pounds; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; fine finger manipulation; operation of a weed eater, lawn mower, blower, edger and a variety of hand tools; operating a motor vehicle through city traffic.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
  • Safe work practices.

Ability to:

  • Perform semi‑skilled landscape maintenance work.
  • Operate a variety of mowers, edger, and other routine park maintenance equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs on buildings, fences, athletic fields and other facilities.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Learn to operate a variety of light mechanical equipment.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

No prior work experience required. High School Diploma or GED, is required.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License.
