Job summary

City of Garland is seeking a grounds maintenance worker to perform routine manual labor for parks, athletic fields, and facilities. You will operate mowers, tractors, and related tools under supervision and assist with irrigation, repairs, and cleanup.

High school diploma or GED and a Class C Texas driver license are required. Work is performed outdoors with exposure to weather and heavy lifting, with pay range depending on experience.

  • Assists with irrigation, pool operations, playground repairs, construction, and chemical applications.
  • Operates tractors and mowers, edgers, line trimmers, and related equipment.
  • Supports setup and breakdown for athletic tournaments, events, and seasonal programs.
  • Operates a city vehicle to assist in routine maintenance.
  • Follows safety guidelines and reports hazards promptly.

Job description

Summary

Responsible for performing routine manual labor tasks for the maintenance and upkeep of City parks, grounds, buildings, athletic fields, aquatic areas, irrigation, and landscape. Responsible for operating basic tools, equipment, and machinery to accomplish tasks. Assignments are received daily and reviewed in progress and upon completion. Work is performed with close supervision following established procedures and safety guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Mows, edges, trims, rakes, weeds, and removes litter and debris from parks, medians, rights-of-way, athletic fields, and landscaped areas.
  • Perform tree maintenance and removal throughout at City parks, grounds, buildings, athletic fields and related facilities.
  • Cleans and maintains park restrooms, pavilions, playgrounds, and other facilities.
  • Assists Technicians with irrigation digs, pool operations, playground repairs, construction, and chemical applications.
  • Operate tractor with mower attachments, including one ton truck with trailer, riding mower, edger, line trimmer, backpack blower, push lawnmower, small hand tools, etc.
  • Supports setup and breakdown for athletic tournaments, special events, and seasonal programs.
  • Operate a city vehicle to assist in carrying out routine maintenance.
  • Follows safe work methods and reports hazards promptly.
Division-Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Grounds: Turf mowing, edging, graffiti removal, restroom cleaning, litter/debris removal, in parks and rights-of-way.
  • Athletics: Drag/chalk fields, install/remove bases and goals, assist with turf prep for practices and tournaments.
  • Irrigation: Assist with digging trenches, pipe repairs, hand watering, and system installations.
  • Aquatics: Assist with cleaning pool decks, checking baskets, and general upkeep of aquatic facilities.
  • Parks Trades: Assist with mixing/pouring concrete, carrying materials, assembling benches, fences, and playground equipment.
  • Landscape: Clean and maintain park and other location assets, including Downtown Garland. Litter, trash removal, clean/sanitize bathrooms, stain/graffiti removal, assist assigned landscape technician with horticultural tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license
Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Incumbent will be subjected to frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, lifting, reaching, pulling and pushing, and carrying up to 50 pounds. Work performed outdoors in extreme weather conditions, heat and cold, rain, humidity, wetness, insects. Exposure to dust, noise, fumes, traffic, and hazardous materials. May also be exposed to potential biohazards including trash, animal waste, bloodborne pathogens, and unsanitary conditions in public areas. May work in confined spaces, on ladders up to 12 feet, and near moving mechanical parts.
