Job summary

El Paso County (CO) is seeking a grounds maintenance worker to perform semi-skilled labor across grounds, facilities, and construction tasks. The role requires operating light and heavy equipment, driving County vehicles, and performing preventive maintenance under SOPs.

Regular in-person presence and adherence to safety procedures are essential. Two years of experience and a valid driver's license required.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Two years of professional experience in grounds maintenance or related field.
• Must possess and maintain a driver’s license.
• Must possess and maintain a Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License within six months of employment; CDL training provided by El Paso County.
• Must pass conditional background check, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.

Responsibilities

• Performs unskilled or semi-skilled labor in grounds maintenance, facility, and construction areas.
• Operates light and heavy equipment and vehicles, including skid-steer, backhoe, turf maintenance gear, and dump trucks.
• Performs routine preventive maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, equipment, and tools.
• Trains and coordinates staff/volunteers; reviews safety checklists and work orders; oversees crews as needed.
• Drives County vehicles and other equipment per County guidelines.
• Provides departmental support for special events and activities.
• Performs other duties as required.

Hiring Range:

$48,000.00 - $54,000.00 annually

The anticipated work schedule for this position is Monday - Thursday, 6:00 am – 4:30 pm, subject to change.

Performs semi-skilled labor tasks associated with park maintenance, operations, and construction programs. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.

• Performs unskilled or semi-skilled labor in any or all of the areas of grounds maintenance, facility or equipment maintenance, and construction, including turf and irrigation maintenance, horticulture activities, minor construction, facility cleaning, and trash collection.
• Performs labor tasks as required in the maintenance of park facilities, including the use and operation of specialized vehicles, equipment, and power tools as needed for assigned maintenance and improvement projects.
• Operates light and heavy equipment and vehicles, such as skid-steer, backhoe, turf maintenance equipment, and dump truck. Performs routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools.
• Trains and coordinates the activities of staff and/or volunteers performing related work; completes weekly safety check lists and work orders; oversees crew members and volunteer groups as needed.
• Drives County vehicles and other equipment to perform assigned duties; operates all County vehicles and equipment in accordance with County guidelines.
• Provides departmental support for special events and other activities.
• Performs other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised:

This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others.

Supervision Received:

Receives intermittent supervision. This classification normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor is expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of horticulture and landscape maintenance techniques, sprinkler systems, and related equipment.
• Knowledge of hand and power tools, painting, plumbing, and minor electrical repairs.
• Ability to work independently and carry out assignments in a safe and proper manner.
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with County staff and the public. Ability to provide excellent customer service.
• Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical work in all types of weather.
• Ability to safely operate light and heavy equipment. Must observe and follow safety procedures and precautions.
• Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Required Education & Experience

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• High school diploma or equivalent education.

Licenses/Certificates

• Must possess and maintain a driver’s license.

Pre-Employment Requirements

• Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.

Duties are performed both indoors and outside in the field in various weather conditions. Requires physical effort to perform frequent lifting, bending, and climbing. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Physical hazards may be present when mixing or working with chemicals, power tools, and motorized equipment. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Subject to drug and alcohol testing.
