Parks Equipment Operator (The job description for the Senior Parks Equipment Operator is below.)
Summary of Duties: Under basic supervision, the Parks Equipment Operator is responsible for operating light and/or heavy equipment in the installation, repair, and maintenance of assigned area of responsibility.
Distinguishing Characteristics:This is the journey-level classification in the Park Equipment Operator series. The incumbent operates light and/or heavy equipment and follows procedures to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Incumbent may lead the work activities of others in the absence of the Park Equipment Operator, Senior. This class is distinguished from Park Equipment Operator, Senior in that the latter is a higher-level class in the series that performs more complex technical, investigative, and supervisory duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
Typical Decisions:The incumbent is responsible for: the proper maintenance and upkeep of assigned sites; inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment to ensure it is in operable condition; identifying and eliminating potential safety hazards; use of safe work methods and safety equipment and PPE; operating equipment within the guidelines of the appropriate Operator’s Manual. Incumbent must determine proper methods of maintenance and repair for each project.
Knowledge of:Operation and maintenance of equipment; routine construction, repair and maintenance methods; basic safety standards; landscaping maintenance.
Skill in:Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light and/or heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of assigned functional operations.
Experience: One (1) year of previous landscaping or construction experience which involves the operation of light and/or heavy equipment in assigned area of responsibility.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Senior Parks Equipment Operator
Summary of Duties:Under general supervision, the Park Equipment Operator, Senior is responsible for operating specialized equipment in the installation, repair and maintenance of facilities in assigned area of responsibility.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Park Equipment Operator series. The incumbent plans detailed methods to attain desired objectives working within established policy. Methods require use of initiatives and resourcefulness in developing processes and procedures. Works under indirect supervision, conferring with supervisor on unusual matters.

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:Operation and maintenance of equipment; routine construction, repair and maintenance methods; basic safety standards; landscaping maintenance.
Skill in:Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating light equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of assigned functional operations.
Education:High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
Experience:Two (2) years of previous landscaping or construction experience which includes the operation of specializes or heavy equipment.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
Licenses and Certifications:Must be able to obtain a Texas Class “A” Commercial driver’s license within 12 months of employment.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, parks, and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and specialized equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to constant noise, cold and hot temperatures, temperature swings, dust, mechanical hazards, and hazardous odors and fumes.
