Job summary

First Student is seeking a Safety Manager to lead driver safety, training, and regulatory compliance for the Essex County Paratransit operation. You will oversee safety programs, conduct evaluations, and guide a team of drivers and staff to uphold the highest safety standards.

This role requires hands-on leadership, strong communication, and the ability to analyze safety data, implement corrective actions, and collaborate with operations leadership to improve performance.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in transportation safety or driver training.
• Experience in paratransit operations or similar community transportation.
• Knowledge of ADA transportation requirements and passenger assistance.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee the location’s safety and driver training programs.
• Provide initial, refresher, remedial, and ongoing training to drivers and transportation employees.
• Conduct behind-the-wheel driver instruction and safety evaluations.
• Train employees on defensive driving techniques and safe vehicle operation.
• Provide instruction on passenger assistance techniques and proper passenger securement procedures.
• Train employees on ADA transportation requirements and accessibility standards.
• Conduct accident and safety-event investigations and maintain documentation.
• Identify safety trends and recommend corrective actions to reduce risk and improve performance.
• Coach drivers and employees after safety events or performance concerns.
• Monitor driver performance and compliance with safety standards.
• Support employee qualification and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Maintain required safety, training, and driver documentation.
