The Opportunity
Responsible for evaluating donor suitability for automated pheresis procedures. Administers and supervises approved immunizations other than red blood cell immunizations. Provides limited emergency medical care to donors and staff, including medication or treatments in accordance with licensure or certification.
You will report to the Center Manager.
The Role
- Promotes positive customer relations with all donors.
- Conducts confidential and effective interviews with donors to assess their suitability for plasma donation.
- Collaborates with the Center Medical Director and/or Center Physician to address medically related questions from staff, including donor suitability and medical issues.
- Performs medical history reviews and health assessments on donors. Evaluates donor screening and laboratory test results to determine initial and ongoing suitability.
- Notifies and counsels donors about reactive test results. Refers donors for follow-up and counseling at community facilities.
- Explains informed consent, including procedures, hazards, potential adverse events, immunization schedules, doses, and antibody responses. Ensures donors understand and voluntarily sign consent forms.
- Handles medical emergencies at the Center by providing routine care as per SOPs; escalates to Center Physician or medical services as needed. Checks emergency kits regularly to ensure supplies are in date.
- Reviews test results to determine continued donor eligibility, following SOPs regarding acceptable ranges and four-month test reports.
- Observes signs and symptoms that may disqualify a donor from continuing donation.
- Oversees donor immunization programs where applicable, reviews antibody titers, and maintains knowledge of immunization schedules.
- Accurately records donor data in the electronic management system as per SOPs.
- Maintains a clean, efficient work environment, ensures availability of supplies, and follows all HSE and OSHA policies. Promotes safety and conducts routine audits.
- Maintains confidentiality of all personnel, donor, and center information.
- May be cross-trained in other areas to meet operational needs.
- Bilingual skills may be required based on organizational needs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Your Skills and Experience
Education
- Graduation from a paramedic, nursing, physician assistant, chiropractic, medical school, or naturopathic medical training program.
- If graduated from a foreign medical school, must hold current licensure or certification as specified.
Experience
- At least one year of experience in a healthcare environment.
- Experience in a plasma or blood collection center preferred.
- Ability to perform and analyze physical assessments.
- Ability to instruct donors, staff, and community about plasma donation benefits.
Working Conditions
- Ability to make decisions impacting the immediate work unit.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Visual and verbal communication skills necessary to interact with customers and observe equipment.
- Ability to stand and walk frequently, up to 100% of the time.
- Ability to assess skin and other abnormalities visually, tactually, and olfactorily.
- Manual dexterity required for reaching, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Fast-paced environment with interruptions, exposure to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures, and bloodborne pathogens.
- Must wear PPE as required and work overtime as needed.
