Job Description

Job Summary/Definition

Under direction of a school administrator, the Paraeducator – Behavior Intervention assists a certificated teacher in providing behavior and academic interventions and supports to students. This role involves providing students with the support they need to succeed academically, socially and behaviorally, and performing clerical duties.

Examples of Duties/Responsibilities

1. Assist teachers by reinforcing instruction to whole class, small groups and/or individual students.

2. Verbally and physically assist students with adaptive equipment, communication systems, and activities of daily living such as ambulation, grooming, toileting, dressing, eating, and personal hygiene.

3. Administer first aid and remain informed of medical needs or problems with students.

4. Maintain records, collect and record data related to student performance and behavior.

5. Use appropriate strategies when working with students in crisit (e.g. students who are dysregulated or elope). Following appropriate training, participate in physical restraint of students during behavior emergencies.

6. Assist in keeping learning spaces neat, clean, and safe.

7. Supervise students during structured and unstructured times (e.g., lunch, recess).

8. Communicate regularly with teachers, behavior teams, and staff regarding student progress, conduct, and behavioral needs while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

9. Assist with bus boarding and departing.

10. Carry out verbal and written instructions.

11. Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Guide Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

1. Basic concepts of child development and behavior characteristics.

2. Behavior management strategies and techniques

3. Basic subjects including arithmetic, grammar, spelling and reading.

4. Record-keeping techniques.

5. Computer operations/data entry, word processing, and spreadsheets.

6. Evidence Based Practices for children with disabilities (for example Instnsive Behavior Intervention, Picture Exchange Communication Systems, Discrete Trial Training, Applied Behavior Analysis).

7. Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to:

1. Remain calm during emergency situations.

2. Apply behavior management techniques and methods.

3. Correctly lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.

4. Maintain certification in District provided crisis intervention training.

Training/Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years’ experience or other transferable skills/training as an Instructional Assistant working with children with disabilities in an organized setting utilizing behavior techniques and strategies.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a First Aid/CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

District Paraprofessional Proficiency Exam certification mandated by the State of California for Paraprofessionals.

Certification may be granted in one of the following three ways:

1. Possession of an Associate’s Degree (AA); or

2. Completion of 48 college semester units (official transcripts required); or

3. Completion and passage of the district-approved proficiency test.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

1. School environment.

2. Subject to sitting, standing for long periods, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, reaching using hands and arms, climbing, balancing, kneeling, squatting, twisting, crouching, or crawling.

3. May be required to use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; see to read.

4. Subject to noise, odors and maladaptive student behaviors (including verbal and physical outbursts).

5. Exposure to communicable diseases, contact with human blood, other body fluids and hazardous material.

6. This position would be assigned to either classroom or an individual student.
