Job summary

The Chicago Park District is seeking a Painter Foreman for BID work. You will lead a crew in inside and outside painting tasks, prepare material estimates and ensure projects meet plans and safety standards.

With five years of painting experience (two in supervision) and a valid Illinois driver’s license, you will coordinate work, manage supplies, and uphold quality across maintenance projects for Chicago park facilities.

Qualifications

• Five years of painting experience with at least two in a supervisory role.
• Current valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.
• Knowledge of safety precautions in the painting trade.
• Ability to read blueprints and interpret color charts.
• Ability to supervise a crew and communicate with staff and the public.

Responsibilities

• Directs the execution of inside and outside painting work per plans and specifications.
• Supervises crew in painting, varnishing, refinishing of surfaces and related tasks.
• Makes material estimates and monitors consumption for jobs.
• Erects and dismantles rigging and scaffolding as required.
• Reviews time and attendance reports and ensures compliance with union rules.

THIS IS A BID POSITION

This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between the Chicago Park District and the Painters District Council 14. Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement, the District will exhaust internal eligible applicants prior to considering external applicants. The District is assembling a list of qualified candidates for this position that will be considered should the position not be filled with internal eligible applicants.

Title: Painter Foreman - BID

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under general supervision, has immediate charge of a crew of employees engaged in inside and outside general painting work. Directs such a crew in stripping, stenciling, decorating and paper hanging. Makes estimates of material required. Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Directs in accordance with prescribed plans and specifications, the execution of any kind of inside and outside painting work.
• Directs a crew in the painting, varnishing or refinishing of woodwork, floors, furniture or any kind of wood or metal objects.
• Directs such a crew engaged in the removal of old paint or varnish or other finishes from surfaces.
• Directs a crew in striping, stenciling, decorating and paper hanging.
• Directs the mixing of paints and the matching, harmonizing and contrasting of colors. Makes estimates of materials required.
• Directs the erection and dismantling of rigging and scaffolding as required. Reviews and approvals time and attendance reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience: Five years of painting experience, two years of which should be a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. License Requirement: Current valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to the painting trade.


• Knowledge and skill in the use of painting tools and materials and related equipment.


• Knowledge of the principles and procedures of painting.


• Ability to communicate and cooperate with public, park staff and other trades.


• Ability to drive a one-half or three-quarter ton vehicle as required to support job function.


• Ability to supervise employees.


• Written and oral communication skills.


• Ability to read blueprints and knowledge of color charts as pertaining to the painting trade.


• Knowledge of surface preparation procedures.
