Job description

Powell is a manufacturer of switchgear and other electrical equipment. We are currently hiring a Painter/Blaster at our Southeast Houston manufacturing facility. Schedule: Monday-Thursday 5:00am-3:30pm; OT as needed.

Position Summary

Paint raw steel platforms and various products and equipment.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Paint raw steel platforms and various products and equipment.
2. Move platforms and various products using an overhead crane or forklift.
3. Perform Wet Painting tasks in a safe and timely manner.
4. Occasionally perform general labor and cleaning tasks as directed by your supervisor or leadperson.
5. Keep up with routine maintenance procedures and cleaning equipment.
6. Document inspections and paint usage in proper records.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or General Education Diploma preferred.
2. Minimum of 2 years of experience in wet painting, sandblasting, and surface preparation techniques.
3. Ability to perform basic math functions.
4. Proficient with the use of Airless and Conventional paint spraying systems with minimal to no defects.
5. Knowledge of wet painting and proper paint mixing techniques (e.g., two-part Epoxy primer and Polyurethane paint).

Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements

1. Must have a basic command of the English language, both written and verbal.
2. Proficient with the use of Steel Grit Blasting equipment and knowledge of basic maintenance.
3. Ability to work independently or as part of a small team and perform required tasks with little supervision.
4. Ability to maintain a clean work area by picking up trash, sweeping the floor, and disposing of paints and solvents in the appropriate location throughout and at the end of the shift.
5. Ability to perform and recognize a Commercial Grade Blast cleaning on steel.
6. Ability to use a wet paint film thickness gauge and dry film thickness gauge.
7. Ability to use a dial thickness gauge to achieve the appropriate anchor profile of required blast.
8. Ability to recognize and properly repair defects in paint finish (i.e., runs, holidays, and orange peel).
9. Ability to perform basic troubleshooting functions on Airless and Conventional paint spraying equipment.
10. Ability to follow directions, company operating procedures, safety rules, and ISO requirements.
11. Ability to work up to 12-hour shifts upon request. Frequently required to work a 6th day (Saturday) during your normal shift and occasionally a 7th day (Sunday).

Working & Environmental Conditions

1. Ability to stand and walk on concrete floor continuously for a minimum of 8 hours per day.
2. Ability to lift metal objects of up to 50 pounds frequently for a minimum of 8 hours per day.
3. Ability to pass a breathing test and full-face respirator fitment test.
