Job summary

County of Hawai'i seeks skilled painter for the Parks Maintenance Division in Kailua-Kona. Duties include surface preparation, applying paints by brush or spray, and maintaining painting equipment.

Position requires completing an apprenticeship or equivalent experience; valid Hawaii driver's license and readiness for field work are required. Two permanent full-time vacancies; in-person interviews may be conducted.

Responsibilities

  • Mixes and matches paints.
  • Applies paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, and enamels by brush or spray gun to surfaces.
  • Estimates time and material needs.
  • Erects scaffolding and protects areas from paint splatter.
  • Prepares surfaces by scraping, burning, sanding, or washing; fills nail holes and cracks.
  • Cleans brushes and equipment; operates vehicle to transport equipment to job sites.
  • May supervise other painters and assign tasks to helpers.
  • May perform other building trades when not painting.

Job description

Performs skilled painting work in preparing a variety of surfaces for painting and applying paint and other decorative and protective coatings by brush or spray gun; and performs other related duties as required.

There are two (2) immediate permanent full-time vacancies with the Department of Parks & Recreation - Parks Maintenance Division in Kailua-Kona.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

  • Mixes and matches paints.
  • Applies paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, and enamels by brush or spray gun to building exteriors and interiors, furniture, cement, and other surfaces.
  • Estimates time and material needs.
  • Erects scaffolding and removes or covers objects to prevent their becoming splattered with paint.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, sanding, or washing and by puttying nail holes and cracks.
  • Cleans brushes and other painting equipment.
  • Operates vehicle to transport equipment and supplies to job sites.
  • May assign tasks to other painters and supervise the work of helpers.
  • May perform services in other building trades when not engaged in painting.
Training and Experience

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • successful completion of apprenticeship training (scan and attach a copy of your certificate of completion for painting apprenticeship to your application), or
  • three (3) years of experience as an apprentice or helper under a journey level painter.
License Requirement
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at the time of hire).
Examination

All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of

Practices, tools, and equipment used in applying paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, and enamels and other painting materials; methods of cleaning brushes and other painting equipment; methods of preparing surfaces for the application of paint and other similar coverings; methods of preparing, mixing, blending, and preserving different painting materials; and occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to

work from riggings and scaffolds; estimate time and materials needed to perform a job; mix and match paints; recommend blending, harmonizing, and contrasting colors; and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
