Job summary

County of Hawai'i seeks dedicated Animal Care Attendants to maintain safe, sanitary shelter facilities and care for animals. Three vacancies exist in Puna and Kailua-Kona with permanent and temporary terms; position requires handling animals, record keeping, and public interaction.

Special working conditions include seven-day operations, possible four 10-hour days, weekend/holiday work, and exposure to hazardous conditions. Health and safety standards apply.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One (1) year of experience in the care, feeding and handling of animals in an animal control agency, a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, cat or dog boarding facility or other related facility.

Responsibilities

• Daily cleaning of kennels, cages, and public areas to maintain a sterile environment.
• Maintain sanitary conditions in animal enclosures and kennel areas; keep workspace clean and organized.
• Humanely handle and kennel animals; identify shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling.
• Observe and report symptoms of sickness or unusual behavior to staff.
• Assist public in identifying missing pets and reunify pets with owners.
• Maintain equipment; report needs to supervisor.
• Evaluate and select incoming animals for adoption; perform health checks.
• Treat all animals humanely and with compassion.
• Assist in moving animals in and out of kennels; disinfect food and water bowls.
• Stock areas; clean kennels and kennel laundry; attend shelter meetings and events.

Duties Summary

Independently maintains safe and sanitary facilities for shelter animals and the public; processes and cares for shelter animals; and performs other related duties.

There are three (3) immediate vacancies with the Animal Control and Protection Agency:

• one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy in Puna
• one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy in Kailua-Kona
• one (1) immediate temporary full-time vacancy not-to-exceed 01/31/2027 in Kailua-Kona

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Special Working Conditions: The Animal Control and Protection Agency is a seven (7) day a week operation. Working hours may include four (4) day/ten (10) hour workdays, weekend, and holiday work as required. Exposure to hazardous, filthy, and/or obnoxious conditions.

Examples of Duties

• Performs daily cleaning of kennels, cages, and public areas, following proper disease control protocol to ensure a sterile environment.
• Mantains sanitary conditions in animal enclosures and kennel areas; maintains clean and organized work environment.
• Humanely and effectively handles and kennels animals; identifies shelter animals with appropriate tags or bands before kenneling.
• Observes and monitors behavior of animals; distinguishes and reports symptoms of sickness or unusual behavior to appropriate staff.
• May assist the public in identifying a missing pet; assist with the reunification of a pet with their owner.
• Maintains equipment in working condition; reports equipment or supply needs to supervisor.
• Assists in the evaluation and selection of incoming animals to be made available for adoption; performs and records health checks in accordance with proper procedures and protocols.
• Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion.
• Assists with taking animals in and out of kennels or cages.
• Cleans and disinfects food and water bowls and other utensils.
• Stocks areas; spot-clean kennels and public areas throughout the day; cleans, folds, and stocks kennel laundry throughout the shelter.
• Immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any major incidents requiring special attention; practices extreme caution in caring for animals; complies with safety regulations.
• Ensures all kennels have identification cards completed and posted.
• Attends and participates in shelter meetings, community and educational presentations, and events.
• May operate a motor vehicle to perform work-related travel.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:

• graduation from high school, and
• one (1) year of experience in the care, feeding and handling of animals in an animal control agency, a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, cat or dog boarding facility or other related facility.

License Requirement

• possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver’s license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver’s license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver\'s license at time of hire.)

Examination

All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant\'s training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of: animal care, identification of various animal species, and basic cleaning and disinfectants; safe and effective handling, restraint, and confinement of animals; characteristics of different species and breeds of animals, and laws, ordinances, and regulations applicable to the proper care, control, and protection of animals.

Ability to: apply safety precautions involved in the safe handling of animals; enforce animal control regulations; detect unusual behavior or condition of animals; communicate effectively with the public; plan assignments; follow oral and written instructions, and keep records.
