Job summary

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. is seeking a marine painter to prepare wood, metal, and fiberglass surfaces and paint ships and equipment.

You will coordinate with the team to ensure quality finishes on both interior and exterior components. The role requires a high school diploma or GED plus 1–3 years of marine painting experience; knowledge of ship terminology, OSHA regulations, and proper coating techniques is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalence plus 1–3 years marine painting experience.
• Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
• Knowledge of ship terminology, OSHA safety regulations, and hazardous material handling desired.
• Experience with marine coating applications and surface preparation preferred.
• Proficient use and care of spray guns, brushes and rollers, and sandblasting equipment.

Responsibilities

• Regular attendance and ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
• Comply with safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations, and policies.
• Prepare work site; transport paint, tools, materials, and equipment to job site as needed.
• Prepare surfaces for painting and mix solvents according to formula.
• Remove grease, dirt, paint, and rust from surfaces using abrasives, solvents, brushes, etc.
• Protect surfaces not to be painted using masking tape or other materials as required.
• Operate painting and sandblasting equipment to apply paint or remove rust.
• Paint areas inaccessible to spray gun using brush or roller; touch up as needed.
• Mix and match colors of paint.
• Maintain a clean work area, tools, and equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under minimal supervision, prepare wood, metal, and fiberglass surfaces for painting, and paint parts, equipment, the interior and exterior of ships and Company equipment and buildings.

• Prepare work site; transport paint, tools, materials, and equipment to job site as needed.
• Prepare surfaces for painting and mix solvents according to formula.
• Remove grease, dirt, paint, and/or rust, etc. from surfaces using abrasives, solvents, brushes, etc.
• Protect surfaces or items that are not to be painted using masking tape or other material as required.
• Operate or tend painting and/or sandblasting equipment to paint and/or sandblast surfaces.
• Paint areas inaccessible to spray gun or retouch painted surface, using brush/roller.
• Mix and match colors of paint.
• Maintain a clean work area, tools, and equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIREMENTS Education/Experience:

• High school diploma or GED equivalence plus one to three years of marine painting experience desired.
• An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
• Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations desired.
• Knowledge of the transportation and storage of hazardous material requirements desired.
• Working knowledge of marine coating applications and surface preparation required.
• Working knowledge in the proper use and care of spray guns, brushes and rollers, sandblasting equipment, etc. required.

SKILLS

• Ability to read and comprehend written, oral, or diagram forms.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Knowledge of the safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure.
• Ability to determine the difference between colors, matching or detecting any type of difference between colors they work with.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstanding extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.
