Job summary

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. seeks a skilled carpenter to support the fabrication, assembly, installation and repair of wooden structures on marine vessels.

Under general supervision, you will use woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools to build floors, doors, partitions, ladders, and railings. You will attend regularly, follow safety and OSHA guidelines, read plans, and measure materials accurately to ensure shipboard quality.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent plus six or more months carpentry experience.
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct marine vessels.
• Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations.

Responsibilities

• Regular attendance and flexible hours including overtime, weekends and holidays.
• Comply with safety, ethics, and environmental rules and policies.
• Assist in constructing floors, doors, and partitions using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
• Assist in installing permanent and temporary ladders and handrails.
• Assist in installing sound dampening and ballast materials.
• Assist in placing blocking material for vessel blocking and alignment per specs.
• Under supervision, measure and cut materials to conformance with specifications.
• Rig cranes using hand signals to move materials safely.
• Accountable for completion of daily work assignments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, perform normal craft-specific duties as required to support the fabrication, assembly, installation and/or repair of a variety of wood structures and furnishings in marine vessels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

• Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays.
• Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations and policies while performing duties.
• Assist in the construction of floors, doors, and partitions, using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
• Assist in the installation of permanent and temporary ladders and handrails.
• Assist in the installation of sound dampening and ballasting materials.
• Assist in the placing of blocking material for vessel blocking.
• Assist in the layout and alignment of material in accordance with specifications.
• Under supervision, measure and cut materials to determine conformance to specifications.
• May assist in the rigging and flagging of cranes using hand signals to move material safely to desired locations.
• Accountable for completion of daily work assignments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalence plus six or more months carpentry experience desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

• Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct marine vessels.
• Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations desired.

Skills: Ability to read and comprehend written, verbal, or diagram form. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to read a tape measure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstand extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.
