Job description

Job Summary

Physical Plant Department invites applications for a full‑time, non‑exempt position with benefits, including health benefits, retirement plans, life insurance, tuition remission, assistance programs, paid holidays, and paid leave. Overtime, shift‑differential and on‑call pay are available for non‑exempt positions. The role is under general supervision and involves painting work at the journey level, preparing surfaces, and maintaining painting equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, sandpapering or dissolving previous paint coatings; fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk or putty; tape, spackle, and finish drywall.
  • Remove fixtures, spread drop cloths and cover surfaces to protect during painting.
  • Select, mix and match paints.
  • Stain and finish furniture, paint and touch up signs, and hang wall coverings.
  • Prepare estimates of time, labor and materials; prepare reports reflecting daily operations and project status.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment of the painting trade; erect and work from scaffolding and ladders.
  • Clean work area upon completion of project.
  • Provide guidance and training in painting work to other maintenance personnel; may have lead responsibility for special projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Four years progressively responsible experience in the painting trade.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of painting trade methods and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of basic mathematics (area, volume, weights, and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions).
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the painting trade.
  • Skill in use and maintenance of painting tools and equipment.
  • Ability to schedule and lay out work, perceive normal color spectrum, prepare summaries and reports, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment, from ladders, rigging, and scaffolding.
  • Ability to manipulate heavy equipment and tools up to 70 lbs and operate equipment that requires multiple controls.
  • Ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions.
Physical Demands
  • Perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting.
  • Work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Wear and work in personal protective equipment.
  • Operate a variety of equipment, including office equipment.
Minimum Qualifications

Four years progressively responsible experience in the painting trade.
