Job summary

VDOT’s Internship Program offers paid summer work experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, introducing them to public service while addressing engineering needs across multiple disciplines.

As a student intern, you will perform planned duties, contribute to project documentation, maintenance, and data records, and develop both technical and leadership skills under supervision.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled full-time in an Associate’s degree program or higher.
• Have a basic knowledge of engineering principles.
• Must be at least 18 years old by the start of employment.
• Must maintain a full-time graduate status taking 9 or more credit hours per semester at a college/university before and following internship.
• Must maintain a full-time undergraduate status taking 12 or more credit hours per semester at a community college or 4-year college/university before and following internship.

Responsibilities

• Communication with VDOT staff and external contacts; proactively resolve issues at the lowest level.
• Apply principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment.
• Project Documentation: Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records for all project activities; update data to meet deadlines.
