Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a student intern to engage in planned, education-related work experiences that connect classroom learning with practical applications in the workplace.

You will participate in engineering technology tasks, perform routine equipment maintenance, and help with project documentation and record keeping. The role emphasizes communication skills, the ability to read engineering plans, and mathematical knowledge in algebra and geometry.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled full-time in an Associate’s degree program or higher.
• Basic knowledge of engineering principles.
• Must be at least 8 years of age at start of employment.
• Must maintain a full-time graduate status taking 9+ credit hours per semester before and after internship.
• Must maintain a full-time undergraduate status taking 12+ credit hours per semester before and after internship.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with VDOT staff and external contacts; proactively resolve issues.
• Apply engineering technology principles to assigned program areas; interpret policies and procedures.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment; follow guidelines for storage, use, and transport.
• Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities; avoid delays and resolve issues.
• Maintain accurate records of project activities; enter and update data to meet deadlines and requirements.
• Interpret and apply relevant policies and procedures.
