Job summary

UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill, NC offers a Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program (MAAP) as a full-time, 12-month training track designed to prepare participants for a Certified Medical Assistant role.

The program includes up to 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of online coursework, with three learning phases in an outpatient clinic, leading to eligibility for the NHA Medical Assistant Certification Exam and potential permanent placement.

Qualifications

• Health care experience preferred but not required.
• BLS certification within 90 days of employment.
• None required as long at other position requirements are met.

Responsibilities

• Performs rooming and/or intake process including vital signs, height, weight, and data collection related to patient's reason for visit.
• Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history. Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies and preferred pharmacy.
• Assists the provider as directed, during treatments, examinations and procedures. Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy. Administers medications under designated manager / supervisor.
• Performs tests, for example EKG, eye exams, under designated manager / supervisor. Reviews the patient record to determine whether patient requires any routine health screenings.
• Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure. Prepares, cleans, stocks and maintains exam and treatment rooms. Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
• Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
• Assists with patient registration, check in/check out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments. Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under designated manager / supervisor.
