Job summary

The Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury offers a Local Government Audit Intern program for Summer 2027 (June 1 – August 6). This 10-week paid internship exposes undergraduates and graduates to active audits, records review, and audit-focused training.

Interns explore internal controls, financial statements, and governance practices while building professional skills through etiquette, networking, and cohort activities. Some travel may be required within East Tennessee.

Qualifications

• Rising juniors/seniors or graduate students in accounting or related fields.
• Completed at least 6 accounting credits; preference for intermediate/advanced coursework.
• Demonstrates adaptability, critical thinking, and ability to work both independently and in teams.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, organizational, and writing skills; applies classroom knowledge to audit work.

Responsibilities

• Learn to examine and review records, reports, financial statements, and management practices for local government entities and organizations receiving public funds.
• Assist in evaluating fairness of financial statement presentation, internal controls, efficiency of operations, and compliance with laws and contracts.
• Participate in professional development activities and gain hands-on audit experience.
