Job summary

Chartwells Higher Ed is seeking a Human Resources Intern in Washington, DC. The role supports day-to-day HR administration, including recruitment, onboarding, payroll compliance, training, and workplace safety within a hospitality environment.

The intern will gain hands-on experience across HR disciplines, work with management, and contribute to employee relations and engagement while developing professional skills in a fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist with recruitment activities, including posting positions and supporting hiring initiatives.
• Support onboarding processes, including new hire documentation and I-9 compliance.
• Maintain and audit personnel files for accuracy and compliance with policies.
• Review payroll records to identify discrepancies and support labor compliance.
• Coordinate and track employee training programs and onboarding requirements.
• Participate in safety initiatives and compliance activities.
• Assist with performance appraisal tracking and documentation.
• Support employee engagement and communication programs.
• Ensure labor law postings remain current.
• Collaborate with managers to gather information and complete HR projects.
• Build positive working relationships with employees, managers, and stakeholders.
• Assist with HR assessments, recordkeeping, reporting, and other administrative functions.
• Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.
