Job summary

The City of Saginaw is seeking a Packer Truck Operator to collect yard waste, recyclables and other materials, and to operate heavy equipment for seasonal tasks such as street sweeping, snow removal, and salting icy roads.

The role includes varied shifts, overtime on scheduled workdays, weekends, holidays, and in emergencies. A valid Michigan CDL Class B with airbrakes is required, along with a high school diploma or GED and experience in outdoor physical labor.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial driver's license (CDL) Group B, with no restrictions (Airbrakes required) required.
  • Related experience performing a variety of outside physical labor task is required.
  • Previous experience with heavy duty vehicle driving and similar public works equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of the City's street system, with the ability to read and comprehend maps, diagrams, and follow schedules.
  • Basic proficiency in data entry on handheld computerized devices.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a packer truck, controlling mechanisms for loading, compressing, and dumping materials from either side of the truck.
  • Follow assigned routes for the collection of yard waste, recyclables, and other materials. Transports to appropriate disposal facilities.
  • Clean, monitor, and inspect packer truck daily for proper operation and safety.
  • Communicate with office staff using two-way radio regarding materials collected, routes covered, and any incidents or violations encountered.
  • Consult with supervisor on any route changes or hazardous driving conditions.
  • Works at the City's Convenience station as scheduled one (1) Saturday shift per month.
  • Operate trailer-mounted equipment such as crack filler, chipper, and air compressor.
  • Assist in manual tasks such as snow shoveling and clearing debris post-street sweeping.
  • Assists with snow removal and ice control spreading salt using on-ton mini dump.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned, including brush pickup, basic labor, street maintenance, tree maintenance, tree trimming, and street sweeping

Working Conditions

This work requires the constant exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, lifting, and repetitive motion; frequent sitting and occasionally climbing or balancing, pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to recognize information at normal spoken work levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make find distinctions in sound; work requires, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surrounding and activities; work is regularly performed near moving mechanical parts, exposure fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, vibrations and occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and bloodborne pathogens; work is generally performed in a very loud noisy location (e.g. jackhammer work, garbage recycle plant).
