Job summary

Slate is seeking a Packaging Engineering Manager in Carson, CA or Troy, MI to lead a small team and own the packaging strategy and roadmap for Accessories and Service Parts. You will set standards, lead validation, and ensure packaging protects the product while delivering a compelling unboxing experience.

The role requires a BS in Packaging Eng or related field with 8–12+ years in packaging engineering, including 3+ years leading engineers, and strong knowledge of ISTA/ASTM standards.

Qualifications

• BS in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, Mechanical Eng or related field.
• 8–12+ years of packaging engineering experience for automotive or consumer products with 3+ years leading engineers.
• Deep knowledge of packaging materials and standards (ISTA, ASTM, labeling requirements).
• Proven track record building and developing teams in fast-moving environments.
• Experience owning supplier-facing packaging guidelines, QC criteria and validation programs across suppliers and 3PLs.
• Strong influence without authority; align multiple teams and senior leaders.
• Comfortable in start-up environments; able to create playbooks and roll up sleeves.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead a small, high-performing team of packaging engineers.
• Own the packaging strategy and roadmap for Accessories and Service Parts.
• Set packaging standards, test protocols and design guidelines.
• Deliver an unboxing experience that protects the product and tells the Slate story.
• Define supplier and 3PL packaging requirements and approve designs.
• Align Engineering, Supply Chain, Purchasing, and Brand around one packaging plan.
• Plan capacity and prioritize across multiple accessory programs.
• Own packaging tooling and development budget; balance cost, protection, and speed.
• Review CAD/die line files and test results; step in hands-on when needed.
