Job summary

Rochester Precision Optics is seeking a Packaging Engineer to design, develop, validate, and continuously improve packaging solutions for precision optical components throughout manufacturing, storage, and customer delivery. This role demands hands-on engineering and problem-solving for high-value, fragile products.

The position collaborates with Operations, Quality, Engineering, and Supply Chain to ensure product protection, efficiency, and regulatory compliance, with a focus on reducing damage

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years packaging engineering experience in manufacturing environments.
• Experience with packaging solutions for high-value/fragile products such as optics, electronics, or medical devices.
• Proficiency with CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, for packaging components and fixtures.
• Experience with packaging validation testing and ISTA/ASTM methods.
• Ability to design custom packaging, trays, dunnage, and protective handling solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement packaging solutions for precision optical components and finished products.
• Engineer reusable trays, totes, fixtures, and handling systems.
• Develop customer-facing packaging meeting protection, cleanliness, and regulatory requirements.
• Evaluate packaging performance via drop, vibration, environmental, and distribution testing.
• Create and maintain packaging drawings, specifications, BOMs, and change docs.
