Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Packaging Engineer to design returnable and expendable packaging for parts and shipments. You will collaborate with global teams to ensure protection, efficiency, and cost control across logistics and operations.

The role involves developing packaging concepts using 3D tools, supporting supplier packaging standards, and driving continuous improvement initiatives with cross-functional partners. Relocation assistance is available, and travel is up to 10% domestically.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in packaging or related engineering field or equivalent experience.
• Analytical thinking to identify root causes and implement options.
• Strong collaboration across cross-functional teams to resolve packaging issues.
• CAD/engineering skills to produce, analyze and test designs.
• Effective communication to share concepts and requirements.
• Packaging knowledge to design safe, cost-effective solutions.

Responsibilities

• Establish packaging specs at part level for new products and cost saving initiatives.
• Communicate packaging needs with receiving, warehousing and line-side teams.
• Perform cost analyses and recommend optimizations for packaging processes.
• Lead Green Belt projects and cross-functional improvements.
• Develop packaging solutions for painted components and improve transport efficiency.
• Design containerization, perform testing, and quote new packaging.
• Validate packaging during pilot and coordinate with operations for storage/ergonomics.
• Develop, communicate and maintain supplier packaging requirements; audit conformance.
