Penn State Health in Harrisburg seeks a Physician Assistant to diagnose and treat acute, episodic, or chronic illness, independently or with a team. You may order tests, provide care for hospitalized patients, and participate in procedures under physician supervision.

  • Graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant Program or baccalaureate or higher degree program that meets licensure requirements in the State of employment
  • National Certification in State of employment or in another State with reciprocity and licensure to practice in the State of employment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Responsibilities

  • Examine patients to obtain information about their physical condition.
  • Make tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients.
  • Prescribe therapy or medication with physician approval.
  • Obtain, compile and record patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination.
  • Administer or order diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests.
  • Interpret diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
  • Instruct and counsel patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
  • Visit and observe patients on hospital rounds or house calls, updating charts, ordering therapy, and reporting back to physician.
  • Provide physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and infection management.

Job Summary

Diagnose and treat acute, episodic, or chronic illness, independently or as part of a healthcare team. May focus on health promotion and disease prevention. May order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays. May prescribe. Provides care of hospitalized patients and has full control of a patient throughout their entire shift.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - The percentage of time spent performing essential functions is 95%.

  • Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
  • Examine patients to obtain information about their physical condition.
  • Make tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of patients.
  • Prescribe therapy or medication with physician approval.
  • Obtain, compile and record patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination.
  • Administer or order diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests.
  • Interpret diagnostic test results for deviations from normal.
  • Instruct and counsel patients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES - The percentage of time spent performing secondary functions is 5%. The following duties are considered secondary to the essential duties listed above: Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
  • Graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant Program or baccalaureate or higher degree program that meets licensure requirements in the State of employment
  • National Certification in State of employment or in another State with reciprocity and licensure to practice in the State of employment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
