Job summary

The Susan Wayne Center is seeking Overnight Residential Counselors to support the development and growth of young adults with significant emotional challenges on the rural Thompson, CT campus. This role involves implementing humane, safe interventions and ensuring adherence to policies while working with a dedicated treatment team.

Applicants should be prepared for overnight shifts, have a High School Diploma (Bachelor’s preferred), and be willing to obtain required licenses.

  • Provide supervision and assistance to counselors in completing residential assessments and interventions.
  • Assist students with daily program schedule, meals, recreations, and ADLs.

Job description

The Susan Wayne Center is seeking Overnight Residential Counselors to effectively support the development and growth of young adults who have experienced significant emotional challenges.

The Susan Wayne Center of Excellence (SWCE) and the River Run Academy offer intensive residential, educational, medical, and clinical services for adolescent boys and girls who are mild to moderately cognitively impaired with concurrent behavioral, mental health, and medical issues. Located in rural Thompson, Connecticut, our state-of-the-art campus offers warm, home-like facilities in a pastoral setting.

Our students have often experienced complex trauma and often have not been successful in other settings. SWCE students typically require additional support in the classroom, as well as with emotional and behavioral difficulties, executive functioning, and life skills.

Compensation

The pay range for this position is $19.00 to $25.00 per hour. The listed range reflects what we reasonably and in good faith expect to pay for this role at the time of posting the position. The actual compensation an employee is offered may vary based on several factors such as experience, education, licensure, certifications and qualifications. This range may be modified in the future.

Due to the nature of our work and the youth who are depending on us, there are times where overtime may be mandated.

What You'll Do:

  • Provide humane treatment and ensure dignity for all individuals. Implement all interventions in the most respectful, safest, and least restrictive manner possible
  • Follow JRI Code of Conduct and Ethics policies, and JRI policies on confidentiality, including confidentiality of records.
  • Implement all crisis intervention techniques as you were trained following the BCC protocols. Report any violations of these protocols to a program administrator.
  • Support and follow all Treatment Team decisions
  • Provide supervision, training, and assistance to counselors in completing residential assessments and interventions with students.
  • Assist student with following the daily program schedule, including meals, recreations, housekeeping, chores, and ADLs, and more as listed in full job description.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Bachelor's Degree, with a major course work in human services, psychology, social work, or sociology preferred.
  • Remain awake throughout overnight shift to ensure safety and wellbeing of students.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly in both written and oral communications.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize one’s own schedule and activities to successfully complete all required tasks.
  • Mental health program experience with adolescents preferred. Knowledge of basic Microsoft computer systems and internet preferred.
  • Background Check: Acceptable driving record check, Nationwide Alpha background check, State of CT criminal background, and DCF background check.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Ability to be certified in BCC.
  • A valid driver’s license in state of residency and approval to drive from JRI insurance to drive for JRI business.
  • Ability to be certified in American Red Cross CPR/First Aid.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly in both written and oral communications.
  • Ability to independently plan and organize one’s own schedule and activities to successfully complete all required tasks.
  • Eligibility for certification in Medication Administration for DCF and/or DDS
  • Availability to work any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet the staffing needs of the program in the event of staffing shortage. Ability to meet the requirements of the mandated staff policy if the need arises.
