Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old with a related bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum three years of progressive experience in resident camp, youth development, outdoor recreation, or a comparable setting
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, training, and developing staff and/or volunteers
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Experience managing programs, budgets, and operational priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be observant, safety-conscious, and able to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies
  • Required YMCA and safety certifications must be obtained and maintained within established timelines

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and oversight for assigned resident camp programs and operations, ensuring a safe, engaging, inclusive, and high-quality experience for campers, families, groups, and guests
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, coaches, and develops staff and volunteers; ensures appropriate staffing levels, clear performance expectations, and consistent application of YMCA policies and practices
  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates assigned programs and services using participant feedback, outcomes, enrollment trends, industry practices, and organizational priorities to support continuous improvement
  • Maintains active oversight of participant safety and well-being, including appropriate supervision practices, behavior support, emergency response, incident reporting, and child abuse prevention requirements
  • Ensures assigned programs operate in accordance with YMCA policies, applicable laws and regulations, licensing requirements, American Camp Association standards, grant requirements, risk management practices, and other applicable standards
  • Develops and maintains effective communication and positive relationships with campers, parents/guardians, staff, volunteers, alumni, community partners, vendors, and other stakeholders
  • Develops, manages, and monitors assigned budgets and financial performance; supports enrollment, retention, revenue, expense management, and other established program goals
  • Ensures facilities, equipment, supplies, records, systems, and other resources needed for assigned programs are maintained and used safely and effectively; coordinates with facilities and other support teams as needed
  • Supports marketing, recruitment, outreach, registration, fundraising, alumni engagement, special events, and other activities that strengthen participation and advance the camp’s mission
  • Maintains accurate and timely records, reports, evaluations, incident documentation, staff records, and other required program or operational documentation
  • Participates as an active member of the resident camp leadership team and collaborates across departments to support year-round camp operations, strategic priorities, and a consistent participant and staff experience
  • Represents the YMCA positively in the community and participates in branch, association, professional development, and other meetings or activities as assigned
