Job summary

Simmers Crane Design & Services is seeking an Overhead Crane Technician to troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain crane systems at customer facilities. You will perform OSHA-compliant safety inspections, diagnose problems, and coordinate with engineering for repairs.

Responsibilities include on-site maintenance at steel mills, auto plants, and other heavy industrial sites, with travel as needed. Qualifications include 3+ years in related fields and strong mechanical/electrical skills.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 years in industrial maintenance, crane service or related field.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical/electrical equipment; welding preferred.
  • Experience as crane technician or related trades preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to complete service reports.
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable for company vehicle.
  • Willingness to travel, including overnight travel, as needed.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, overtime, and emergency calls.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varied environments.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds; use equipment or team for heavier lifts.
  • Commitment to safety and OSHA/NFPA/industry standards.

Position Description

Job Summary:

The Overhead Crane Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and maintaining overhead crane systems and related equipment at customer facilities. Working independently or as part of a team, this role diagnoses electrical and mechanical issues, performs repairs and preventative maintenance, conducts OSHA-compliant safety inspections, and ensures equipment operates safely and reliably.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshooting, repairing, installing, and modifying overhead crane systems.
  • Perform documented safety inspections of specific types of equipment in keeping with OSHA guidelines.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment at customer owned facilities such as steel mills, auto manufacturing plants, foundries, large machine builders and steel processing facilities.
  • Work independently, or as part of a crew, to diagnose electrical and mechanical problems with equipment in heavy industrial manufacturing facilities.
  • Identify needed parts, repair procedures, communicate with the customer, interface with our engineering department, and perform the repair.
  • Responsible for documentation of hours, services performed, writing service acknowledgements, and working with computers.
  • You will be trained to perform your duties in compliance with NFPA 70E Arc Flash Protection requirements.
  • Motor control experience on systems with AC or DC power is necessary.
  • You will be trained to perform documented safety inspections of specific types of equipment in keeping with OSHA guidelines.
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an industrial maintenance, manufacturing, construction, crane service, or related field; equivalent military experience will be considered.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and/or electrical equipment; welding experience is preferred for applicable positions.
  • Experience as a crane technician, millwright, ironworker, industrial electrician, maintenance technician, or similar trade is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work instructions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and the ability to complete electronic service reports and documentation.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets company standards and is eligible for coverage under the company vehicle insurance policy.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, including overnight travel, as required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and emergency service calls, when needed.
  • Ability to safely work at heights, in confined spaces, and in indoor and outdoor industrial environments under varying weather and operating conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, with heavier lifting performed using appropriate equipment or team assistance.
  • Commitment to working safely and following OSHA, ANSI, ASME, CMAA, NFPA, and all applicable company safety policies and procedures.
