Job summary

Simmers Crane Design & Services, part of Flatiron Crane, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to design, develop, and test mechanical systems and components. You will lead cross‑functional collaboration to deliver cost‑effective, high‑quality solutions while ensuring safety and performance standards.

The role requires strong CAD skills (CREO/AutoCAD), a Mechanical Engineering background, and willingness to travel across the Midwest region.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s degree preferred for select roles).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus, but not required.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as CREO, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude; familiar with manual and power hand tools.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Midwest region.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems, components, and products using CAD software and engineering tools
  • Perform calculations, simulations, and analyses to validate designs and ensure compliance with safety, reliability, and performance standards
  • Produce technical drawings, specifications, repair procedures, and documentation for manufacturing and assembly
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and project teams to support production, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Conduct prototype testing, collect data, and evaluate product performance
  • Research new materials, methods, and technologies to enhance product performance and efficiency
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with company and industry standards

Position Description

Job Summary:

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems, components, and equipment. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and high-quality solutions.

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude; familiar with manual and power hand tools
  • Skilled in data collection using micrometers, calipers, and measuring tape
  • Comfortable working at heights and physically capable of operating scissors lifts and boom lifts
  • Willingness to travel throughout the Midwest region
