Job summary

Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding, LLC is seeking an Outside Machinist to install and commission vessel machinery, including propulsion and auxiliary systems. You will read blueprints, lay out connections, and work with steam pipe systems to ensure proper operation.

The role involves testing machinery during dock and sea trials and fabricating replacement parts with lathes, milling machines, and other shop tools as needed. A background in heavy industry or shipbuilding is preferred.

Qualifications

• 5 years of outside machinist work as an A class machinist or 8 years A class millwright experience.
• Vocational training in machinist field is helpful.
• Experience in heavy industrial/shipbuilding environments is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Install vessel machinery such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps and ventilation systems.
• Layout passage holes from drawings and connect steam lines and shafting.
• Test and inspect installed machinery during dock and sea trials.
• Set up and operate machine tools to fabricate replacement parts as needed.

Job description

General Function: The outside machinist is responsible for installing the vessel's machinery, such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Works from blueprints and use hand tools, calipers and micrometers.
• Layout passage holes on bulk heads, decks and other surfaces for connections, such as shafting and steam lines.
• Installs below deck auxiliaries, such as evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers and connect them to steam pipe systems.
• Responsible for testing and inspecting installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
• May set‑up and operate such machine shop tools as a lathe, boring mill, planer, shaper, slotter and milling machine to fabricate replacement parts.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of gauges, calipers micrometers, lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters and milling machines.
• Capable of reading blueprints.

Desirable Experience & Training

• Prior experience as an outside machinist or boilermaker in a heavy industrial or shipbuilding environment.
• Vocational training in the field of machinist is helpful.
