Job description

Journeyman Outside Machinist – Job Description

The Journeyman Outside Machinist is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, overhaul, alignment, and testing of mechanical equipment and machinery onboard marine vessels and within shipyard facilities. This position performs precision mechanical work on propulsion systems, pumps, valves, piping systems, bearings, turbines, compressors, and auxiliary equipment in support of ship repair and modernization projects. The role requires strong technical knowledge, the ability to work independently, and adherence to all safety and quality standards.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform disassembly, inspection, repair, overhaul, installation, and testing of marine mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Conduct precision measurements, alignments, and machining operations using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and specialized equipment.
  • Remove, repair, and reinstall pumps, valves, shafts, bearings, motors, reducers, and associated mechanical components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, specifications, schematics, and work packages.
  • Execute work in accordance with project specifications, NAVSEA standards, OEM requirements, and shipyard procedures.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical failures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform flange make-up, coupling alignments, shaft alignments, and machinery fit-up activities.
  • Support hydrostatic testing, operational testing, and system checkouts as required.
  • Complete required documentation including CFR responses, TIPs, QA forms, and work status reporting.
  • Coordinate with supervisors, planners, quality assurance personnel, and other trades to ensure efficient project execution.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure work areas remain clean and safe.
  • Comply with all shipyard safety regulations, environmental requirements, and company policies.
  • May provide technical guidance and mentorship to apprentices or junior mechanics.
Machine Operators
  • Operate presses, CNC machines, mills, lathes, or other production equipment.
  • Risk of injury due to moving parts, pinch points, and high temperatures.
  • Requires constant attention to prevent serious accidents.
  • Move heavy or hazardous materials through production areas.
  • Work near other workers and tight aisles; require visibility and precision.
  • Use open flame or electrical arc processes (welding, cutting, grinding); risk of burns, sparks, or fume exposure.
  • Must maintain awareness and PPE compliance at all times.
Required Qualifications
  • Journeyman-level experience as an Outside Machinist in the ship repair, marine, or industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of shipboard mechanical systems and rotating equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and schematics.
  • Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments including micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and alignment tools.
  • Experience performing machinery alignments and equipment overhauls.
  • Ability to work aboard ships, in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain shipyard access and security credentials as required.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior naval ship repair experience.
  • Experience working under NAVSEA standards and military specifications.
  • Forklift, rigging, or crane signaling certifications.
  • OSHA 10/30 Maritime certification.
  • Knowledge of welding, pipefitting, or valve repair practices.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, crawl, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and shifts as required by production schedules.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Environment

Work is performed aboard vessels, in shipyard environments, machine spaces, dry docks, and industrial settings with exposure to noise, heat, cold, vibration, and industrial hazards. Strict adherence to safety procedures and PPE requirements is mandatory.
