Job summary

Bollinger Shipyards in Pascagoula, MS is seeking an experienced Outside Machinist responsible for installing vessel machinery, including propulsion and auxiliary systems. You will read blueprints, use precision tools, and connect steam piping for systems on large ships.

Responsibilities include testing installations during dock and sea trials, fabricating replacement parts with machine tools, and ensuring workmanship in a heavy industrial shipyard environment.

Qualifications

• 5 years of outside machinist work as an A class machinist or 8 years of A class millwright experience.
• Prior experience in heavy industrial or shipbuilding environments.
• Vocational training in machinist fields is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Install vessel machinery and connect to steam pipe systems.
• Layout passage holes on bulkheads, decks and surfaces for shafting and steam connections.
• Test and inspect installed machinery during dock and sea trials.
• Set up and operate machine shop tools to fabricate replacement parts.

Job description

General Function

The outside machinist is responsible for installing the vessel’s machinery, such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Works from blueprints and uses hand tools, calipers and micrometers.

Layout passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for connections such as shafting and steam lines.

Installs below deck auxiliaries such as evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers and connects them to steam pipe systems.

Responsible for testing and inspecting installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.

May set‑up and operate machine shop tools such as a lathe, boring mill, planer, shaper, slotter and milling machine to fabricate replacement parts.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of gauges, calipers, micrometers, lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters and milling machines. Capable of reading blueprints.

Desirable Experience & Training

Prior experience as an outside machinist or boilermaker in a heavy industrial or shipbuilding environment. Vocational training in the field of machinist is helpful.
