Job summary

The New York Botanical Garden is seeking an Outreach and Education Coordinator to develop and promote Bronx Green-Up outreach, education and volunteer programs in New York. You will organize workshops, track data, and provide technical assistance on composting.

This role requires a bachelor’s degree (preferred) or equivalent experience, 2+ years in community outreach, strong communication and organizational skills, and willingness to work weekends and some evenings with local travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum two years of related work experience in community outreach, education, environmental programming or related field.
  • Knowledge of composting, community greening and environmental stewardship.
  • Experience working with the public, independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Valid New York State driver's license; local travel required; weekends/evenings required.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Grow participation in Bronx Green-Up activities through media and campaigns.
  • Develop, organize, and conduct outreach events and workshops.
  • Track and record data for required reports on outreach, education, and volunteers.
  • Provide technical assistance and training on composting and horticulture topics.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and develop volunteers for the program.
  • Perform outdoor tasks and related duties including lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Support additional Bronx Green-Up duties as needed.

Outreach and Education Coordinator

Reports to: Bronx Green-Up Program Manager

Position Summary

The Outreach and Education Coordinator is primarily responsible for developing, promoting, conducting, and documenting the program's outreach, educational, and technical assistance activities as well as other community education and training initiatives. In addition, the Outreach and Education Coordinator organizes events, conducts workshops, manages volunteers, and is responsible for a wide range of administrative tasks.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Grow participation in and awareness of Bronx Green-Up activities and events through mediums that include e-blasts, promotional materials, and social media campaigns.
  • Develop, organize, and conduct activities and events to engage the public with Bronx Green-Up.
  • Track and record all relevant data related to outreach, education, volunteer management, and technical assistance for required reports.
  • Develop, coordinate, and teach workshops and training programs on compost and other horticulture topics.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to Bronx residents, schools, community sites, neighborhood groups, and non-profit organizations interested in composting and community stewardship activities.
  • Create tip sheets, handouts, flyers, signs, and other materials.
  • Recruit, train, coordinate, supervise, and develop opportunities for volunteers interested in engaging with the Bronx Green-Up program.
  • Perform tasks such as shoveling, weeding, loading/unloading plant and compost material, etc., in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Additional Bronx Green-Up duties as needed.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, be able to lift and\or move up to 25 pounds.

Baseline Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm

Salary: Commensurate with experience within the range of $50,000-$55,000
