Job Overview
The professional registered nurse Outpatient RN CAP 2 may be an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP) for new employees who meet the RN CAP 2 criteria or attained through advancement from RN CAP 1. This position is responsible for providing and coordinating clinically competent care, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. It may involve delegation of tasks to direct patient care staff such as RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. As part of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this role participates in decision-making, teaching, leadership, and quality improvement activities to enhance patient outcomes and facility operations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform all essential functions under supervision and guidance from the Clinical Educator, Preceptor, or other RNs.
- Collect and analyze patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatments; document findings and adjust treatment plans as needed.
- Assess and document patient/family learning needs; provide education accordingly.
- Ensure the safe and effective delivery of hemodialysis therapy in collaboration with care staff.
- Administer medications as prescribed and document their effectiveness.
- Assist with emergency response measures when necessary.
- Serve as a resource, leader, coach, and role model for staff and new employees.
- Ensure proper laboratory procedures are followed and reschedule missed collections.
- Update nursing assessments and care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Inform patients about transplant and treatment options.
- Participate in quality improvement projects and may serve as a preceptor.
- Complete CAP requirements for career advancement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Involves heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, and prolonged standing.
- May require moving equipment up to 200 lbs. with assistance and lifting solutions up to 30 lbs.
- Work environment typical of a healthcare setting, with potential exposure to infectious diseases.
- Includes desk work, computer use, and interaction with staff and patients.
- May require travel to training sites or other facilities.
Supervision
- Oversight of Patient Care Technicians, LVN/LPNs, or RNs as a Team Leader or Nurse in Charge, after meeting specific training and experience requirements.
Education and Licensure
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current state licensure.
- CPR/BLS certification.
- Meet state practice requirements.
Experience and Skills
- Minimum 2 years of Nephrology Nursing experience; entry level RNs considered if they meet other criteria.
Pay rate varies based on location and qualifications, ranging from $36.00 to $62.00 per hour.
