Job summary

Sierra7 is seeking a Part-Time Medical Coding Trainer - Outpatient to develop, deliver, and maintain high-quality training programs for VA medical coders and providers. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of VHA coding standards and compliance, translating complex concepts into clear instruction.

The role requires adaptability to business demands and may involve working outside standard hours. This position is fully Remote, with salary details to be discussed upon request.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver comprehensive training programs on ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and other coding systems.
  • Apply knowledge of terminology, anatomy, disease processes, and procedures to ensure proper code selection.
  • Review clinical documentation and educate staff on inpatient and outpatient care including admissions and discharges.
  • Develop training materials and e-learning modules from identified trends.
  • Ensure compliance with coding guidelines and monitor regulatory changes affecting VA coding.
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify skill gaps and create customized training plans.
  • Serve as a resource for coding questions and guidance on complex cases.

Description

Sierra7 is seeking an experienced Part-Time Medical Coding Trainer - Outpatient to develop, deliver, and maintain high-quality training programs for VA medical coders and providers.The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of VHA coding standards, compliance requirements, and industry best practices, with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, practical instruction.

The role requires adaptability to business demands, which may require working outside standard hours

Position Responsibilities/Duties:
  • Design and deliver comprehensive training programs on ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and other coding systems.
  • Applies comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, procedures as well as the principles and practices of health services and the organizational structure to ensure proper code selection.
  • Reviews clinical documentation and provides education to clinical staff on both inpatient and outpatient episodes of care including admissions and discharges, observation, emergency department/urgent care, and clinic visits.
  • Utilize identified trends to develop training materials, including presentations and e-learning modules.
  • Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines, and conventions when verifying the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, or procedure code to ensure ethical, accurate, and complete coding. Monitors ever-changing regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum of services provided by the VAMC
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify skill gaps and create customized training plans.
  • Serve as a resource for coding questions and provide guidance on complex cases.
Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of medical coding guidelines and regulations.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in using relevant software and tools (Microsoft Office, VA Coding Systems, SharePoint, etc)
Education and Experience:
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field (preferred).
  • Minimum 3-5 years of medical coding experience, with at least 2 years of VA coding
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with WebVirr
  • Prior training or teaching experience required
  • CPC, CCS, or equivalent coding certification required
