Job summary

U.S. National Whitewater Center is seeking part-time Outdoor Educators in Charlotte, NC. You will implement environmental education programs for K–12 students and support team-building activities under the Outdoor School Supervisor.

Roles emphasize evenings, weekends, and seasonal schedules. Candidates should have teaching experience with school groups, a related environmental background, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in formal or informal settings for K-12 students.
  • Background in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Biology, or related field.
  • Ability to deliver a short environmental lesson during interview.
  • Strong communication skills and energetic, outgoing personality.
  • Current or in-progress NC Environmental Education Certification is a plus.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, AED certification (courses offered by Whitewater Center).
  • Weekday availability; part-time with preference Mon-Fri in March–June and August–November.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, educational, and enjoyable atmosphere during programs.
  • Learn and facilitate lesson plans on environmental education, Team Building, and STEM topics.
  • Manage groups of up to 30 students with effective supervision and communication with chaperones.
  • Assist with greeting school groups and conducting orientation talks.
  • Maintain knowledge of activities, products, and services offered by the Center.
  • Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Outdoor Educators at the Whitewater Center are responsible for implementing a variety of educational programs for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Most programs are scheduled for the spring and the fall, so Educators are encouraged to explore employment in other departments during the summer and winter months. Educators work a variable, part-time schedule, and report to the Outdoor School Supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe, educational, and enjoyable atmosphere during environmental education and team building programs
  • Learn and facilitate lesson plans pertaining to environmental education, Team Building, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) topics
  • Manage groups of up to 30 students at a time, and ensure quality supervision during programs – effective communication with chaperones is essential
  • Assist with greeting school groups and facilitating orientation welcome talks.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered by the Whitewater center
  • Maintain availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Candidates are required to demonstrate competencies by delivering a short example of an environmental lesson as part of the interview process.
  • Prior experience teaching in a formal or informal setting for students from kindergarten through 12th grade
  • Background in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Biology, or another related field
  • Strong communicator who is highly motivated and energetic with an outgoing personality
  • Possession of a North Carolina Environmental Education Certification or current work towards certification is beneficial but not required
  • A current First Aid, CPR, & AED Certification – courses are offered by the Whitewater Center
  • Weekday availability is required. This position is part-time; availability is preferred Monday through Friday in the following months: March through June & August through November
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to safely self-transport over uneven terrain or in a confined space
  • Must be able to work outdoors for sustained periods of time in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, team environment
  • Must be able to lift and move at least 50 pounds
  • Must be able to bend, stand, lean, and kneel on a regular basis

Overview of Department

The Outdoor Activities Department is responsible for leading and supporting experiences in a variety of water and land-based sports. The department also instructs guests through the Whitewater Center’s Outdoor School and Summer Camps. Outdoor Activities employees engage with guests through an assortment of pass activities and help create memorable outdoor experiences.
