Job summary

Civil Science is seeking a Construction Field Intern for Summer 2027 to support transportation and public infrastructure projects across North Dakota. You’ll work with engineers, surveyors, and field staff on roads, bridges, utilities, and related projects.

This field-focused internship involves regular travel to active construction sites, outdoor work, and learning by doing with exposure to planning, surveying, data collection, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in civil engineering, construction engineering, construction management, surveying, engineering technology, or related program.
• Interest in transportation, construction, surveying, materials testing, or public infrastructure.
• Willingness to learn, take initiative and own your work.
• Strong communication skills and dependable, team-oriented approach.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet driving requirements.
• Willingness to travel regularly across North Dakota.
• Basic computer skills; familiarity with AutoCAD/Bentley is helpful but not required.
• Ability to work outdoors in variable weather and lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Support field teams on active transportation and public infrastructure projects.
• Assist with construction observation, field measurements, sampling/testing, surveying support, and project documentation.
• Collect and document field data, quantities, photos, and daily activities.
• Learn to read project plans, specifications, and requirements.
• Use field equipment and software under supervision.
• Communicate professionally with engineers, contractors, agencies and partners.
• Follow safety requirements and maintain a safe, organized work environment.
• Travel regularly to project sites across North Dakota, including overnights.
