Qualifications

  • Interest in transportation, construction, surveying, materials testing, or public infrastructure.

  • Strong communication and a dependable, team-oriented approach.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet driving requirements.
  • Willingness to travel regularly within North Dakota.
  • Basic computer skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office or field data tools is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather, navigate uneven terrain, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Support field teams on active transportation and public infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with construction observation, field measurements, materials sampling and testing, surveying support, and project documentation.
  • Collect and document field data, quantities, photographs, and daily construction activities.
  • Learn to read and interpret project plans, specifications, and construction requirements.
  • Use field equipment, technology, and software under guidance of experienced team members.
  • Communicate professionally with engineers, contractors, agencies, and other project partners.
  • Follow project safety requirements and contribute to a safe, organized work environment.
  • Travel regularly to project locations throughout North Dakota, including overnight or extended field assignments.

You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, construction professionals, surveyors, and field staff while contributing to projects involving roads, bridges, utilities, and other infrastructure that communities rely on every day.

This is a field-focused internship with regular travel to active construction projects throughout North Dakota. If you enjoy working outdoors, solving problems, learning by doing, and seeing the results of your work firsthand, this could be a great opportunity to start building your career.

What You’ll Do
  • Support field teams on active transportation and public infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with construction observation, field measurements, materials sampling and testing, surveying support, and project documentation.

Your responsibilities may vary based on project needs, giving you exposure to different aspects of civil and transportation infrastructure design, construction, surveying, materials sampling and testing, and project delivery.

What You Bring
  • Current enrollment in civil engineering, construction engineering, construction management, surveying, engineering technology, or a related program.
  • An interest in transportation, construction, surveying, materials testing, or public infrastructure.
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions, take initiative, and take ownership of your work.
  • Strong communication skills and a dependable, team-oriented approach.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet Civil Science driving requirements.
  • The ability and willingness to travel regularly throughout North Dakota.
  • Basic computer skills, experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, Bluebeam, or field data-collection tools is helpful but not required.
  • The ability to work outdoors in changing North Dakota weather conditions, navigate uneven terrain, wear required personal protective equipment, and lift or carry field equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
