Job summary

S&ME is seeking Archaeological Field Technicians for a temporary, as-needed role in Columbia, South Carolina. You will support field excavations, artifact processing, and basic analysis under supervision, contributing to cultural heritage projects across diverse industries.

The position requires a High School diploma or GED, with a Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or related fields preferred.

Qualifications

• Strong communication skills in English (speaking, reading, writing).
• Ability to travel extensively across Southeastern/Mid-Atlantic regions.
• Previous archaeological field experience or field school preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct Field Excavations: shovel tests, test unit excavations, systematic artifact collection.
• Perform Artifact Processing: clean, catalog, and prepare recovered materials in the lab.
• Support Artifact Analysis: assist with basic identification and preliminary interpretation.
• Assist with Background Research: compile environmental, historical, and cultural data for planning and regulatory compliance.
• Maintain Accurate Documentation: record field observations and provenience information.
