Job summary

S&M is seeking Archaeological Field Technicians for Columbia, South Carolina. This role involves hands-on fieldwork to uncover, preserve, and interpret material traces of the past, working closely with senior archaeologists on field and lab operations.

You will conduct shovel tests, process artifacts, assist with basic identifications, and help document findings to support regulatory compliance and project research. Strong English communication and willingness to travel are essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Prior archaeological experience or field school preferred.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively across the Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Field Excavations – shovel tests, test unit excavations, systematic artifact collection.
  • Perform Artifact Processing – clean, catalog, and prepare recovered materials in the lab.
  • Support Artifact Analysis – assist with basic identification and preliminary interpretation.
  • Assist with Background Research – compile environmental, historical, and cultural data.
  • Maintain Accurate Documentation – record field observations and provenance information.
