Job summary

Sheltering Arms Institute is seeking a Therapy Upper Extremity Recovery Specialist to deliver high‑quality occupational therapy for patients aged 13+. You will formulate and carry out treatment plans, document progress, and collaborate with the care team to translate evidence into practice.

The role involves employing advanced techniques, participating in program initiatives, and rotating through clinical settings as needed in a nonprofit rehab network.

Qualifications

  • Experience in inpatient rehabilitation is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of neuro-recovery experience using technologies to aid upper-extremity function.
  • Virginia licensure or eligibility for licensure as an Occupational Therapist.

Responsibilities

  • Provide occupational therapy for ages 13+ with upper-extremity focus.
  • Develop and administer treatment plans using evidence-based techniques; document and communicate with the team.
  • Apply knowledge translation to implement and refine best practices.
  • May rotate through inpatient and outpatient clinical areas.
  • Contribute to program development and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Sheltering Arms Institute is seeking a talented Therapy Upper Extremity Recovery Specialist to join our team. The Therapy Upper Extremity Recovery Specialist provides quality, comprehensive, patient-centered occupational therapy services including patient examination (ages 13+), development and administration of a treatment plan through the use of evidence-based techniques, documentation and communication with team members/primary therapist. The Specialist will also use a knowledge translation approach in implementation and refinement of best practices. May rotate through clinical areas.

Innovation & Strategic Initiatives
  • Participates in the development of new services to enhance the Sheltering Arms Institute continuum of care.
  • Initiates and supports new program ideas in consultation with interdisciplinary healthcare team members.
  • May participate in research and leads projects through approval and implementation as appropriate.
  • Participates in the refinement and evaluation of program services.
  • Participates in technology implementation related to upper extremity recovery in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Actively seeks out innovative evidence-based interventions and emerging discipline-specific practice developments.
Outcomes & Excellence
  • Uses outcome measures and other quantifiable data to benchmark and assess the impact of specialty services.
  • Integrates evidence-based practice into clinical service delivery.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of program services and technology utilization.
Education & Knowledge Translation
  • Serves as a resource for advanced practice of information and evidence-based interventions.
  • Collaborates with the OT Advisor in training and competency development for upper limb rehabilitation techniques.
  • Disseminates emerging clinical knowledge and specialty practice developments.
  • Supports staff education and implementation of evidence-based rehabilitation practices.
Community Engagement & Partnerships
  • Collaborates with outpatient teams to support continuity of care and service integration.
  • Promotes awareness and utilization of specialty upper extremity rehabilitation services.
Qualifications And Skills
  • Experience in inpatient rehabilitation preferred
  • At least 3 years of experience in neuro-recovery using a variety of technologies to facilitate upper extremity function.
Education and Certifications
  • Graduate of an accredited occupational therapy educational program required; doctoral degree from an accredited occupational therapy program and/or specialty practice certification preferred
  • Virginia licensure to practice or eligibility and application for licensure by the Occupational Therapy Board of the Virginia State Board of Health Professions required.
  • HCP and CPR certification
Compensation
  • $36.92 - $49.32 per hour
  • This range reflects our commitment to pay equity and market‑competitive compensation.
  • Final compensation depends on experience, skills, and internal equity.
