Job summary

BlueSky Resource Solutions is seeking an OSP Field Technician – FTTP to support field construction activities for Fiber-to-the-Premises deployments. You will monitor progress, verify quality, coordinate with contractors, and ensure designs and safety standards are followed.

OSP Field Technician – FTTP Position Overview

The OSP Field Technician – FTTP is responsible for supporting and overseeing field construction activities associated with Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network deployments. This role serves as the primary field resource for monitoring construction progress, verifying quality standards, coordinating with contractors, and ensuring compliance with engineering designs, safety requirements, and project specifications.

The OSP Field Technician will support all phases of FTTP construction, including feeder, distribution, and drop fiber installation; aerial and underground plant construction; fiber splicing activities; and customer service connectivity. This position works closely with construction crews, project managers, engineers, utility companies, municipalities, and customers to ensure successful project execution and timely delivery.

Key Responsibilities

FTTP Field Operations

  • Support and monitor FTTP construction activities, including feeder, distribution, and drop fiber installations.
  • Verify the installation of aerial and underground fiber infrastructure, including conduit, handholes, pedestals, cabinets, splice enclosures, fiber distribution hubs (FDHs), and multiport service terminals (MSTs).
  • Observe directional boring, trenching, plowing, restoration, and pole attachment activities to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Perform field verification of construction progress against engineering plans and approved designs.
  • Identify and communicate construction issues, route conflicts, and potential delays to project leadership.

Quality Control & Network Readiness

  • Conduct field reviews to ensure workmanship and installation quality meet company and customer standards.
  • Verify proper fiber labeling, slack storage, route identification, and asset placement.
  • Review splice documentation, testing records, and construction deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist in validating OTDR, insertion loss, continuity, and acceptance testing results.
  • Document deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions with construction contractors and project teams.

Contractor & Project Coordination

  • Serve as the primary field point of contact between contractors, engineering teams, project managers, utility providers, municipalities, and property owners.
  • Monitor contractor performance, production rates, and adherence to project schedules.
  • Provide regular updates on construction progress, quality concerns, and field conditions.
  • Assist with project walkthroughs, punch-list generation, and final acceptance activities.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and support a safe work environment by monitoring adherence to OSHA, NESC, and company safety standards.
  • Verify proper traffic control, utility locate procedures, excavation practices, and site restoration activities.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with permits, right-of-way requirements, and local regulations.
  • Report safety concerns, environmental issues, and compliance violations promptly.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate daily reports, field notes, and photographic documentation of project activities.
  • Assist with as-built documentation, redlines, GIS updates, and project closeout packages.
  • Track material usage, completed quantities, and contractor production metrics.
  • Document field observations, deficiencies, and resolution status to support project reporting and quality assurance.

QualificationsEducation

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree or coursework in Telecommunications, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.

Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in FTTP, FTTH, or OSP fiber construction environments.
  • Experience supporting aerial and underground fiber deployments.
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and network construction practices.
  • Experience working with construction contractors, utility providers, and field operations teams.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, fiber route maps, utility plans, and splice diagrams.
  • Familiarity with FTTP network architecture, including feeder, distribution, and drop networks.
  • Working knowledge of fiber testing equipment, including OTDRs and power meters.
  • Experience with GIS platforms, as-built documentation, and digital field reporting tools preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Certifications

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification preferred.
  • FTTH Council, SCTE, FOA, or equivalent fiber certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions.
  • Ability to walk construction sites, rights-of-way, and uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to travel throughout assigned project areas as required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours based on project and construction schedules.
