Qualifications

UNDC is a fast-growing, highly respected telecom network engineering firm that is currently expanding our operations. We collaborate closely with several broadband providers including AT&T and Verizon, engineering new and replacement fiber optic networks.

Job Summary:

UNDC is seeking an experienced Telecom Outside Plant (OSP) Engineer to support our Verizon engineering projects. This role is responsible for developing accurate, constructible OSP designs for fiber and copper networks while ensuring compliance with Verizon engineering standards, project requirements, and quality expectations.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of aerial, underground, and buried telecommunications infrastructure and be able to independently evaluate field conditions, existing facilities, and project requirements to develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.

Environment:

This is a full-time position that requires:

  • Home-based work environment free of distractions.
  • Typical work schedule of Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm with the flexibility to work extended hours.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Perform Outside Plant (OSP) engineering and design for Verizon telecommunications projects, including fiber and copper network infrastructure.
  • Develop engineering designs for aerial, underground, and buried facilities, including cable routes, poles, conduit systems, manholes, handholes, terminals, cabinets, and associated OSP infrastructure.
  • Engineer the placement, replacement, relocation, repair, and modification of OSP facilities to support new service, network expansion, maintenance, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Review and interpret field data, landbase maps, assessor maps, existing Verizon OSP records, utility information, engineering drawings, and construction documentation to develop accurate and constructible designs.
  • Develop feeder and distribution routes, serving‑area boundaries, equipment locations, and fiber distribution layouts in accordance with Verizon engineering standards and project requirements.
  • Prepare engineering work orders, redlines, construction drawings, and supporting documentation for production within IDDS/ICGS and other Verizon engineering systems.
  • Determine appropriate engineering solutions based on existing field conditions, available infrastructure, customer requirements, constructability, cost, and applicable standards.
  • Identify potential design conflicts, unsafe conditions, facility deficiencies, and construction concerns and develop appropriate engineering solutions.
  • Coordinate with drafters, field personnel, project managers, construction teams, permitting personnel, utilities, municipalities, and client representatives to resolve design and project issues.
  • Review engineering and drafting deliverables for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with Verizon and UNDC quality standards prior to submission.
  • Incorporate client comments, field changes, construction redlines, and other revisions into engineering designs as required.
  • Track assigned projects and engineering work orders to ensure established production, quality, and schedule requirements are achieved.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and communicate design issues, scope changes, missing information, and potential schedule impacts to project leadership.
  • Support permitting, right‑of‑way, utility coordination, and construction activities by providing engineering information and design clarification as needed.
  • Maintain working knowledge of Verizon OSP engineering practices, systems, technologies, and client‑specific requirements.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of telecommunications OSP engineering, design, or related experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Outside Plant engineering principles and construction practices, including aerial, underground, and buried telecommunications facilities.
  • Experience designing fiber‑optic and/or copper telecommunications networks.
  • Knowledge of OSP infrastructure, including poles, anchors, guys, conduit, manholes, handholes, pedestals, cabinets, terminals, cable facilities, and associated equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret field notes, utility maps, land‑base information, engineering drawings, construction prints, redlines, and telecommunications facility records.
  • Experience with Verizon OSP engineering standards, processes, or projects strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Verizon systems such as vBuild, IDDS/ICGS, FIMS, Canvas/CoFEE, LFACS, TIRKS, PRS, CP, BDMS, and/or APP is highly desirable.
  • Experience with MicroStation or other CAD/GIS‑based telecommunications design systems preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate multiple design alternatives and develop cost‑effective, constructible engineering solutions that meet client requirements.
  • Understanding of utility coordination, permitting, right‑of‑way, and joint‑use considerations associated with OSP network construction.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify conflicts and resolve engineering issues with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, complete, and client‑compliant engineering deliverables.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments, priorities, and deadlines in a production‑driven environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with field, drafting, engineering, construction, project‑management, and client teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace applications and the ability to learn additional client‑specific engineering systems.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary project team.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, telecommunications, GIS, construction management, or a related technical discipline is preferred. Relevant OSP engineering experience may substitute for formal education.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.
