Job summary

Spire Orthopedic Partners in Massachusetts is seeking an Orthopedic Technician to support the cast room and assist with clinical procedures. The role focuses on casting, splinting, wound care, patient education and teamwork with physicians and staff.

Responsibilities

• Applies, removes, and adjusts casts and splints as ordered by physician or PA.
• Applies prefabricated splints and braces and adjusts them as needed.
• Assesses patient comfort related to casting/splinting and notifies clinical staff.
• Removes sutures and staples.
• Provides wound care and incisional dressings.
• Assists physicians with procedures such as closed reductions of fractures.
• Fits and trains patients to use crutches and canes.
• Educates patients on care and use of casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids.
• Maintains inventory and orders supplies for the cast room.
• Trains new staff in cast room procedures.

What You’ll Do:

Responsibilities/Duties:

• Applies, removes, and adjusts plaster and fiberglass casts and splints in accordance with physician and/or physician assistant orders.
• Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces.
• Assesses patient comfort as it relates to their casting or splinting. Assists with comfort measures and notification of appropriate clinical staff members.
• Removes sutures and staples.
• Provides wound care and incisional dressings.
• Assists physicians with clinical procedures such as the closed reduction of fractures.
• Fits and trains patients to use axillary crutches and canes.
• Educates patients on the care and use of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids.
• Maintains inventory of cast room materials and places orders for supplies when necessary.
• Helps train new staff members in cast room procedures.

Qualifications

Who you are:

• Orthopedic Technician and/or ATC Certification preferred.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 1 year cast room / medical office experience.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Organized with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
• Reliable with patience and professionalism.
• Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
• Develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public by displaying sympathy, tact and understanding.
• Must be a team player with a positive attitude, adjust to various personalities, work with a diverse population, demonstrating patience and professionalism.
• Able to maintain strict confidentiality on all patient issues.
