Job summary

The Dartmouth Health Orthopaedic Practice is seeking an Orthopaedic Technician (Cast Tech) to support ambulatory, inpatient and ER settings under supervision. You will apply casts, educate patients, train staff, and assist physicians during procedures.

Qualified applicants have an Associate Degree in Orthopaedic Technology, excellent communication, and the ability to read medical terminology. BLS at hire is required.

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Science in Orthopaedic Technology is required.
  • One year health care related experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Ability to read and understand medical terminology.

  • Applies and adjusts fiberglass/plaster casts, braces, and/or splints.
  • Educates patients on care and usage of casts.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less casting experience.
  • Trains others on proper casting techniques.
  • Provides assistance to the physician during minor procedures.
  • Assists in cleansing wounds and reducing fractures.
  • Fits thermoplastic splints and braces.
  • Inspects cast saws to ensure optimal performance.
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms and assists physicians with exams.
  • Maintains inventory and submission of charges for devices dispensed.

Job description

Overview

The Orthopaedic Technician (or “Cast Tech”) performs a variety of functions to support and care for patients with a limited degree of supervision in the ambulatory clinic, inpatient, and emergency room settings. Collaborates with specialty teams to provide outstanding patient service in an innovative and fast-paced Orthopaedic Practice.


Responsibilities
  1. Applies and adjusts fiberglass/plaster casts, braces, and/or splints and may assist with assembling and attaching orthopaedic traction equipment and devices.
  2. Educates patients on care and usage of casts.
  3. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less casting experience.
  4. Trains others (e.g., Athletic Trainers, Nurses, and Interns) on proper casting techniques.
  5. Provides assistance to the physician during minor procedures.
  6. Assists provider in cleansing wounds, assists in reducing fractures and application of surgical dressing.
  7. Fits thermoplastic splints and / or braces.
  8. Inspects cast saws to ensure optimal performance.
  9. Escorts patients to exam rooms and assists physicians with exams as needed. Assists nursing staff to maintain timely and orderly patient flow.
  10. Maintains inventory and security of devices and supplies for the care of orthopaedic patients including cast materials, braces, splints, and other devices. Assures appropriate submission of charges for devices dispensed.
  11. Participates in and/or facilitates site-wide committees, meetings, in-services, and activities.
  12. Maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards learning and teamwork.
  13. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Science in Orthopaedic Technology required.
  • One (1) year of previous health care related experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Ability to read and understand medical terminology.

Required Licensure/Certifications
  • Currently Registered with the New Hampshire Board of Registration for Medical Technicians.
  • Certification as an Orthopaedic Technologists (OTC) by the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT), or registration as a Registered Orthopedic Technologist, R.O.T. by the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP)
  • BLS required upon hire
