Job summary

Spire Orthopedic Partners in Peabody, MA is seeking an Orthopedic Casting Technician to support outpatient patient care under the order of referring clinician. You will apply and adjust casts or splints and assist with procedures.

You will educate patients and maintain cast room supplies in a collaborative setting. Required is a High School diploma; Orthopedic Technician certification is a plus, with familiarity of HIPAA, medical terminology, and EMR systems.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma; experience in a cast room or medical office is a plus
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures and other regulatory policies
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, office procedures and etiquette
  • Experience with electronic medical systems including Athena/Centricity and Medi-Tech
  • Orthopedic Technician certification preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Applies, removes, and adjusts casts and splints per physician orders
  • Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces
  • Assesses patient comfort and notifies clinical staff as needed
  • Removes sutures and staples
  • Provides wound care and incisional dressings
  • Assists with closed reduction procedures
  • Trains patients to use crutches and canes
  • Educates patients on care of casts and mobility aids
  • Maintains cast room inventory and orders supplies
  • Helps train new staff in cast room procedures

What You’ll Do

Responsible for the orthopedic casting, bracing, and splinting of patients in an outpatient setting on the order of referring clinician.

  • Applies, removes, and adjusts plaster and fiberglass casts and splints in accordance with physician and/or physician assistant orders.
  • Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces.
  • Assesses patient comfort as it relates to their casting or splinting. Assists with comfort measures and notification of appropriate clinical staff members.
  • Removes sutures and staples.
  • Provides wound care and incisional dressings.
  • Assists physicians with clinical procedures such as the closed reduction of fractures.
  • Fits and trains patients to use axillary crutches and canes.
  • Educates patients on the care and use of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids.
  • Maintains inventory of cast room materials and places orders for supplies when necessary.
  • Helps train new staff members in cast room procedures.
Qualifications
Who you are:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 1 year cast room / medical office experience a plus but not required
  • Orthopedic Technician and / ATC Certification Preferred a plus but not required
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures and other regulatory policies
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe working environment
  • Medical office procedures, policies, practices and medical terminology, telephone protocol and professional etiquette
  • Electronic medical systems, including Athena/Centricity, and Medi-Tech, PM and office management systems and procedures
  • Outstanding knowledge of MS Office
  • Working knowledge of office equipment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Organized with the ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures
  • Develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public by displaying sympathy, tact and understanding
  • Promotes teamwork through collaboration
  • Represents the clinic in a professional manner
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality on all patient issues
