Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Ortho Trauma Med-Surg unit, 24 hours per week, days. Under the supervision of an RN, the PCT provides basic nursing care and support on the unit.

Required: High School Diploma or GED; CNA certification or enrollment in a health science program (or equivalent experience); current BLS/CPR; prior acute/extended care preferred. Responsibilities include ADL support, hygiene, nutrition, vital signs, specimen collection,

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must have CENA or health science program enrollment or equivalent experience.
• Equivalent healthcare experience considered.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology and confidentiality preferred.
• Current BLS/CPR required.
• Experience in acute or extended care preferred.
• Able to complete unit-specific orientation competencies.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and comfort.
• Assist with hygiene activities.
• Indwelling urinary catheter care (excluding insertion, removal and irrigation); dressings; ostomy care.
• Assist with postmortem care.
• Assist with nutrition including passing trays and feeding; record intake.
• Assist with elimination and output; manage drains as directed.
• Collect specimens and perform basic tests as directed.
• Measure and record vital signs and weight accurately.
• Operate and set up equipment safely; infection control practices.
• Document care and communicate observations to the RN.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the RN in charge.
